On West Main Street in Madison, Indiana, you will find a small family restaurant named Chickiepoo’s.

Chickiepoo’s opened in 2009, when Chef Gregor and Phoebe James’ youngest daughter was diagnosed with leukemia. Chef altered his career course to open a boutique restaurant that would allow him to be his own boss and the family to live and work together while Chickiepoo went through her treatments.

You will dine in the front of the house. Chickiepoo and her sister GG will often be found in the back of the house, reading, playing, or napping. Or maybe outside – perhaps even causing mischief.

The atmosphere is casual and the decor reflects many personalized touches – including the family’s own eclectic collection of coffee mugs, the sisters’ artwork, mason jars and milk bottles.

The menu changes weekly, with an emphasis on local and season ingredients. And the food is… well… exquisite (actually, that would be an understatement).

They are open for lunch and dinner Thursday-Saturday.

postscript, May 14:  Isa, aka Chickiepoo, officially completed and was released from treatment on May 9. Chickiepoo’s is now closed – and the family is planning their next personal and culinary adventures. Updates will be available on their Facebook page.
