eat here now

On West Main Street in Madison, Indiana, you will find a small family restaurant named Chickiepoo’s.

Chickiepoo’s opened in 2009, when Chef Gregor and Phoebe James’ youngest daughter was diagnosed with leukemia. Chef altered his career course to open a boutique restaurant that would allow him to be his own boss and the family to live and work together while Chickiepoo went through her treatments.

You will dine in the front of the house. Chickiepoo and her sister GG will often be found in the back of the house, reading, playing, or napping. Or maybe outside – perhaps even causing mischief.

The atmosphere is casual and the decor reflects many personalized touches – including the family’s own eclectic collection of coffee mugs, the sisters’ artwork, mason jars and milk bottles.

The menu changes weekly, with an emphasis on local and season ingredients. And the food is… well… exquisite (actually, that would be an understatement).

They are open for lunch and dinner Thursday-Saturday.

eat. here. now.

postscript, May 14:  Isa, aka Chickiepoo, officially completed and was released from treatment on May 9. Chickiepoo’s is now closed – and the family is planning their next personal and culinary adventures. Updates will be available on their Facebook page.

Sneak peek from a recent session.

mad city crossfit

Last week I had the privilege of working with Mad City CrossFit (& facebook page) to begin developing a marketing portfolio for them.  The assignment was to detail the facilities and activities and capture some of the atmosphere of the box.

What I found was a dynamic, supportive, warm community of people of all ages, fitness levels, shapes and sizes giving 110% to an intense, back-to-basics exercise program. I also had my first WOD and it kicked. my. butt.

I want to thank the owners, Cori and Nick, for inviting me to this project, and all of the members who cheerfully put up with the paparazzi in the midst of some very, very hard work. You have all earned my utmost respect.

I will see you next week with kettlebell rather than camera in hand.

holiday minis

So. Here we are one full week into spring and after a few days of gorgeous warm weather and blooming bulbs and trees, I am looking out my office window to see snow on the ground.

I will take that as a sign that I need to catch up on blogging last fall’s holiday mini sessions before the busy spring begins in earnest.

Here are my favorites from the minis, featuring adorable redheads and silly siblings!

(hu)man’s best friend

Not all of my portrait work is of people. This is Izzy – a rescue –  at obedience school.

siblings

This was one of my holiday mini sessions from last fall – the last image is their holiday card photo. I have since photographed these kids again and was surprised by how much they have grown in just 6 months – a side-by-side comparison coming soon!

precious newborn

Newborns are my favorite subject to photograph, and I have been anticipating this session for months. This gorgeous newborn’s auntie found my website from out of state and purchased a portrait session as a gift for this equally gorgeous new mama and dad. They are over the moon about their sweet baby boy and rightly so – he is absolutely precious. And he has some of the best hair I’ve ever seen on a newborn – couldn’t resist getting shots of that fauxhawk from every angle!

decorating with portraits

I’m starting a new series on the blog, featuring ideas and inspiration for decorating with portraits. As a photographer, seeing my work on display is a great source of pride, and I enjoy bringing my inner interior designer out to play when sitting down with my clients during their home ordering and design consultation. I plan to feature client homes and displays in this series, along with other ideas where I find them.

Where else to start but with my own home? I chose some of my favorite portraits of my boys for a special display in my front hallway – a space that is safe from direct sunlight… and reasonably safe from stray Nerf balls. It’s a tight space but I managed to get a few views of the display. The first picture is a view from my front door into the house. The second image shows the scale of the images – compare the wall prints to the desk prints. I love these large prints – I can see the details of my boys’ faces when I walk into the house, and from across the room and it makes me smile every time I look at them! The 11×14 headshots show the kids at about 80% of life size – and 100% personality!

Don’t be afraid of large prints! The dimensions sound daunting at first – especially if you are used to considering an 8×10 “big” – but once they’re on the walls you’ll find they’re just right.

(And yes, I promise to catch up on posting my winter sessions soon. I’ve been accused of being a lazy blogger. Guilty as charged!)

sneak peek: kids holiday session

These three gorgeous kids were complete pros for the camera. More to come soon.
